Prithviraj’s a la Hazare act

Director Renjith's latest flick 'Indian Rupee' has been set in Gundelpett, a remote village situated in Kerala-Karnataka border. Lead actor Prithviraj narrates how they had to bribe the Karnataka police, every time their cinema unit crossed the border check-post:

"Police aid posts are maintained at border check-posts to ensure the security of freight trucks and passenger vehicles that pass by. But every time our cinema troop passed the aid posts on our way to Gundalpett from Batheri, we ended up greasing their palms. We had to shed upto Rs two hundred each time we crossed the check-post, up and down.

Kerala police check-post comes first in our journey to Gundalpett, which takes about one and half hours. Then comes the RTO check-post, followed by Karnataka police check-post. Our unit simply could not get past the Karnataka police check-post without paying bribes.

However, they have not sought bribes from me though I have crossed the check-post many times on my way to the shooting location in my car. But I could often see them extorting money from other drivers.

Once when our cinema troop hesitated to bribe them, they even took away the police uniform and a few other accessories that we were carrying with us for shooting purposes. Left with no other option, we yielded to their demand.

I do not know how effective Kerala government would be in curbing the practice as the check-post is run by Karnataka police. But, more often it is Keralities who fall victims to this gross injustice.

I think joint efforts from the part of both Kerala and Karanataka governments alone could put an end to this practice. Or Kerala government should bring this issue under the notice of Karnataka government.

It is a strange coincidence that our cinema unit was forced to give bribe at a time when Anna Hazare was staging his anti-corruption crusade in New Delhi.”
